Washing Machine Maintenance Tips That May Surprise You

April 11, 2022

Like most people, you probably use your washing machine a few times a week, if not daily. Because of this, you may not even think about its maintenance. However, just as with any other appliance, there are a few things that you can do to make sure it stays in good working order. If you've ever had a washing machine break down on you, you know just how much of a pain it can be not to have access to one. In the meantime, until you get it fixed or replaced, you will have to pay for laundry services or go to the laundromat. Here are some critical washing machine maintenance tips that may surprise you:

Use the recommended detergent.

Ensure you follow the manufacturer's recommendations for laundry detergent kind, amount, and how to use it. Some water-saving washing machine models, for example, require high-efficiency (HE) liquid detergent or powdered detergent. Some units include a separate detergent tray and fabric softener tray, whereas others don't.

Keep an eye on the washer’s hoses.

A drain, cold water hose, and hot water hose are all included in your washing machine. Every month, inspect these hoses for fractures or brittleness. Right after you've finished washing the clothes, you'll be able to observe if there are any leaks. Is there a crack in the roof? Has your washing machine been repaired by a professional? The recommended practice is to have your washing machine hoses updated every three to five years, even if they appear to be in good condition.

See if you need a drain vent.

The drain hose of a washing machine is equipped with a drain vent to alleviate any pressure that could impede drainage. Local building codes may require this vent. There may be a gap around the drainpipe of your washing machine, so check to see if there is one. It's unlikely you'll need a drain vent unless your local building codes explicitly state that you must. If you don't currently have one, get a drain vent if the hose fits snugly. A water damage restoration company may be necessary if you don't act quickly.

Make sure the door gasket stays dry.

Mold and degradation might occur around the washer door gasket or rubber seal. Keep the gasket dry after each load of laundry by wiping it down afterwards.

Open the door for air circulation.

Mold and mildew can thrive in washing machines. You can reduce the possibility of spores proliferating if you leave the door open when the machine is not in use.

Clean your washing machine often.

How often have you cleaned your washing machine when it comes to mould? Even though front-load washers are notoriously tricky to keep clean, they should all be cleaned at least once every two months. We've compiled a list of washing machine cleaning suggestions.

Clean the lint filter in your washer.

Lint traps are common in washing machines, although many people aren't aware of them. A clogged lint trap could cause excessive fuzz on your clothes. Learn how to locate and clean a washing machine lint trap.
